How are students identified?
Gifted identification is based on a body of evidence, which must include standardized assessments. Students must demonstrate advanced academic abilities over time that is beyond grade level. Thus, the development of this body of evidence is an ongoing process. To be identified as academically gifted and talented in DPS, students need qualifying scores in the following three areas.
Indicator One:
Students need a cognitive assessment score [from either the NNAT or the CogAT] at or above the 95th percentile.
Indicator Two:
Students need academic indicators that show advanced abilities over time.
Indicator Three:
Teachers can complete a standardized, observational checklist [SIGS]. Qualifying scores [at or above the 95th percentile] must be in the same academic area or areas as the academic indicators detailed in “Indicator Two.”

- Two qualifying MAP scores in the same academic area can be used as indicator two. These scores can be collected from year to year (ie: fall 2017 to fall 2018) OR from fall and spring of the same school year. These scores must also be at or above the 95th percentile.
- CMAS scores, at the “exceeds expectation” level may also be used as an academic indicator.

Traditional Path to Identification
HGT or GT
- 1 cognitive assessment: CogAT or NNAT
- 95th – 96th percentile = gifted
- 97th, 98th, 99th percentile = highly gifted
- 1 achievement indictor:
- 2 non-sequential MAP scores OR a qualifying CMAS score
- SIGS
Alternative Paths to Identification
HGT or GT
GT
- 1 cognitive assessment: CogAT or NNAT
- 95th – 96th percentile = gifted
- 97th, 98th, 99th percentile = highly gifted
- 2 achievement indictors [all in the same strength area] - one of the following:
- 2 sets of non-sequential MAP scores [4+ scores]
- 1 qualifying CMAS score & 2 non-sequential MAP scores OR
- 2 qualifying CMAS scores
